Communication • Compassion • Care • Courtesy
There are many other adjectives that can describe the service you should expect from your lawyer, but the four mentioned above can provide a good start. Successful legal representation in most instances will start with communication: you will likely find when you meet with me, that I listen more than I speak. It has been said that knowledge speaks, and wisdom listens: I shall certainly make a point of communicating thoroughly with you, throughout the work I do for you. At first, though, it is very important that I learn what you have to say, and respect your wishes and your understanding of the situation. After all, I am representing your interests, and I should understand those interests before I offer you my advice and suggestions. Compassion is another key requirement: although it is not my job to feel pity for anyone, or to become swamped by my clients’ emotional reaction to any problem, it is my job to understand what is happening, and to act in a way that can help to avoid or eliminate problems. I also do my best to ensure that everything I do is done with care: my clients expect the best, and I remain involved in all the work done in my office, to ensure that it is accomplished in the best possible way. Courtesy is another key component of my practice: I not only go beyond normal expectations to serve my clients, but I also always remember that I am working for people and not merely "clients".
